LOW COST NET SERVICES TO LAUNCH IN NEW ZEALAND

PSINet and Clear Communications have signed a non-binding letter of intent to develop a joint venture to provide Internet access services in New Zealand. PSINet, a major US Internet service provider, should have a 45% stake in the new venture called Clear PSINet Ltd. Service is tentatively scheduled for launch during 1Q'96 although completion of the transaction was subject to the negotiation and execution of definitive agreements. The joint venture would connect the New Zealand network to the global PSINet infrastructure to support unlimited outbound and inbound Internet traffic to the rest of the world for New Zealand organisations and private individuals.

Aust dollar sinking

The Australian dollar has been pushed below 59 US cents, and could head even lower
during the day's trade.

Early in the London session last night, the domestic currency went down to 58.92 US
cents as two major US banks sold it against the yen.

That was despite yesterday's optimistic peek above 60 US cents for the first time in 10 days.

Since London trading, the Australian dollar has been unable to regain any ground beyond
the low 59 US cent mark.

Just before 8 am (AEST), the currency was trading at 58.97 US cents.

One local trading bank dealer says it's under pressure and will likely head even lower today.

State opposition education spokesman Phil Honeywood said it would be impossible to
cut $50 million and not affect education.

"The Auditor-General as well as the National Council of Education ... have both said
that Victoria's Education Department is the leanest and smallest department of any state
in Australia," Mr Honeywood told 3AW.

"It's going to have to affect education programs.

"You can only make these $50 million cuts by actually affecting kids in the classroom."

Mr Sartor said he wanted the NSW government to enact legislation to prevent a repeat
of "this sorry episode".

"Notwithstanding the technicality on which the committee's decision is based, the behaviour
of John Hannaford and Michael Gallacher will stand as one of the greatest abuses of parliamentary
privilege for political gain in the history of the NSW parliament," he said in a statement.

"It should also be noted that the Parliamentary Privilege and Ethics Committee, including
its Liberal Party members, chose unanimously not to pursue the allegations which remain
both untrue and unsubstantiated."

ADELAIDE, April 12 AAP - Victorian health authorities were put on alert today as a South
Australian packing shed was banned from selling oranges after some had tested positive for
salmonella.

The South Australian Health Commission issued an order preventing Riverland packing shed
Constas Bros and its associated supplying orchard from moving or selling oranges.

SA Human Services Department statewide executive director Brendon Kearney said the packing
shed at Cooltong supplied oranges to Nippy's juice company.

Nippy's has been linked to a salmonella outbreak that struck down 486 people.

The packing shed also supplied fresh oranges to one outlet in Victoria and the Victorian
Health Department had been notified and was investigating, Professor Kearney said.

Further tests would determine if the salmonella found at the shed was the same strain as
that linked to the Nippy's outbreak.

"What we've discovered is that there is salmonella in that packing shed and of course we
need more time to type it and to show whether it is the salmonella typhimurium 135a or not,"
Professor Kearney said.

"But the evidence that there is salmonella there is enough to take action."

A spokesman for the Victorian Human Services Department said the matter was being
investigated but there had been no recent cases of salmonella linked to oranges or orange
products.

SA-based juice company Nippy's had its Nippy's, Orange Grove and Aussie Gold fresh fruit
juices banned after being linked to the salmonella outbreak.

The ban was lifted without the source of the contamination being found and all products
were tested before being released on the market.

The ban was reimposed late last month after a test batch revealed further contamination.

Nippy's managing director John Knispel said the Nippy's products went back on sale today as
planned after the health commission lifted the second ban on Friday on the condition that the
company pasteurise all of the products.

"We're having a little bit of trouble filling the shelves again because we've only had
intermittent production for the last month," Mr Knispel said.

"By the end of the week we should have caught up and then we'll be able to tell what our
sales are really going to be like."

CANBERRA, Dec 27 AAP - It came too late for a white Christmas but snow has fallen on the
New South Wales Snowy Mountains today in a rare December display.

A Thredbo resort spokeswoman said light snow fell yesterday and this morning but quickly
turned to rain.

"It snowed really briefly but it wasn't a white Christmas or anything," she said.

The Bureau of Meteorology said snow was recorded at Thredbo and Charlottes Pass.

"It's quite unusual for this time of year," a spokesman said.

The summer snow was the result of a cold front which had developed over the south-eastern
corner of the continent, covering most of Victoria and southern NSW, he said.

"That is combined with a very intense low pressure system in Bass Strait which is producing
the snow and gale force winds."

The midday temperature at Thredbo was minus 2 degrees, and there was a 36 knot wind, the
spokesman said.

"Those conditions should moderate overnight. We don't expect the snow to continue beyond
today."

QLD:Eddy Groves wants separate trial: court

Former ABC Learning Centres boss EDDY GROVES and CEO MARTIN KEMP want to be tried separately
on charges relating to the collapse of Australia's biggest childcare chain, a court has
heard.

GROVES was committed in February in the Brisbane Magistrates Court to stand trial on
one count of breaching the Corporations Act by using his position dishonestly as a director.

KEMP has also been committed on two counts of breaching the Corporations Act.

The charges follow a two-year investigation after ABC Learning collapsed beneath $1.6
billion of debt in November 2008.
